Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment Tool (KICA)
The Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment Tool (KICA) is a valid, culturally appropriate dementia screening tool for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia.
There are many complex needs of older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with dementia and other health-related issues.
The Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment tool (KICA) was developed as a collaboration between the University of Western Australia and the National Ageing Research Institute, project partners Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Service and Kimberley Aged & Community Services, and remote Aboriginal communities.
The KICA was originally developed and validated in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It has since been revalidated in the Northern Territory, Queensland and adapted for use in New South Wales and Victoria. The KICA has been adapted for use in urban and regional communities, and a shorter version (KICA Screen) is available.
It has since been adapted for use in First Nations communities in several other countries.
The research findings indicate the KICA is useful to assess dementia in older Indigenous people. The results are comparable with other cognitive screening tools used in non-Indigenous people.
