Using the knowledge gained in our Bachelor of Dementia care studies, a few friends and I opened The Golden Wattle café in January 2020 in Glenorchy, in the Northern suburbs of Hobart. Initially the café was exclusively for people living with dementia and their care-partners.

However, after discussion with our volunteers and visitors, we decided to open our café to people in the community over the age of 45. This works towards our goal of making dementia more accepted in the community and a means of destigmatizing dementia.

Our aim is to give people a safe, comfortable and understanding environment to visit, and to address isolation and loneliness. It also brings the community together.

A few months ago, a wonderful and talented lady, who is living with dementia, came into our café. She has joined our café committee and agreed to become a Dementia Australia Advocate. She is advising us on ways in which to improve the Golden Wattle Café, and as someone with a lived experience of dementia, gives us further insights into what we must do to make our community more dementia-friendly.
