Dementia Australia’s award-winning programs

Dementia Australia recently received accolades for a number of our programs and services.
We were thrilled to be recognised in multiple categories in The Future of Ageing Awards, which recognise leadership and innovation across Australia’s aged care industry.
Communities of Practice – Winner, Service Transformation
The Centre for Dementia Learning Communities of Practice program works to bring together aged care staff committed to transforming dementia care and helps them overcome the challenges of implementing change. Regular interaction enables Communities of Practice members to build relationships, share knowledge and practice and gain support to lead change in their respective organisations.
This innovative program is the first of its kind in Australia and focuses on transforming dementia care. It provides opportunities for continued learning with access to knowledge experts and leaders in dementia care, enabling participants to keep up to date with emerging improvements in dementia practice.
Dementia-Friendly Communities Program – Winner, Community Engagement
The Dementia-Friendly Communities Program addresses the stigma, isolation and discrimination experienced by the almost half a million Australians living with dementia and the 1.6 million people involved in their care, through the development of communities that accept and include people living with dementia.
The program has the power to change the way we think about living with dementia by empowering people with dementia to live with purpose. Health and other services are critical to assisting individuals with dementia to retain their independence, and to retain their personhood and quality of life. It is the everyday things in life that matter.
Dementia Australia Advisory Committee – Highly-commended, Consumer Experience
The Dementia Australia Advisory Committee is made up of people living with dementia. The first of its kind in Australia, the national committee provides strategic advice to Dementia Australia and other stakeholders on shaping dementia services, programs, policy development and advocacy goals.
The committee aims to be a catalyst of change, working towards an inclusive future, where people living with dementia are valued and respected.
Exploring Dementia Program – Highly-commended, Indigenous Communities
During the past three years, the Centre for Dementia Learning has focussed on delivering the educational Exploring Dementia program to improve the dementia care knowledge of the health and aged care workers supporting Indigenous clients living with dementia in remote communities.
The program was delivered in Far North Queensland in September and December 2018, with additional funding provided for a second year in 2019 and the ongoing delivery in the Northern Territory began in March 2021.
