How can I reduce the risk of dementia?

Adopting a brain-healthy lifestyle is beneficial at every stage of life and, while there is no certain way to prevent dementia, there are many things you can do to support your brain health.

Dementia Advocate Simone, who supported both her parents through dementia, has made a number of lifestyle changes to reduce her risk.

“I’m doing all I can to lead a life that is less stressful and promotes better mental health,” she said.

Simone moved from Sydney to regional New South Wales to lead a more relaxed lifestyle and gave up her high-powered position in corporate health for a part-time job.

She now volunteers in a dementia care facility, the Central Coast Dementia Alliance and Dementia Australia.

“I’ve done a lot of learning to be the best version of myself that I can and to lead a good, clean, healthy life,” she said. “Knowledge is key.”

Can you prevent dementia?

While there is no evidence to show that you can definitively prevent dementia, the following health and lifestyle factors may reduce your risk of developing the condition or delay the onset of symptoms. 

Look after your heart:

  • Book regular GP check-ups for blood pressure, blood glucose levels and cholesterol
  • Eat a healthy diet 
  • Stop smoking

Look after your body:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Adopt healthy sleeping practices
  • Look after your hearing and get your hearing checked in mid life
  • Protect your head

Look after your mind:

  • Stay social, enjoy the company of others
  • Play games like puzzles, crosswords and card games
  • Learn a new language
  • Take up a new sport
  • Learn a new hobby like painting, sewing, woodwork and cooking
  • Vary your daily activities
